THC is the primary cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis. The amount of THC in a product can vary widely based on the method of consumption and the strain at the source of that product. The high that is produced is often enhanced by the “entourage effect” which is a combination of multiple cannabinoids in conjunction with various terpenes and individual body chemistry.
CBD is the second most prevalent cannabinoid and is primarily produced by hemp plants and at lower amounts in cannabis. CBD has soared in popularity due to its non-psychoactive effects.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis that contribute to each strain's unique flavor and aroma. Total terpenes represents the combined concentration of all terpene compounds detected in the product, which may influence the overall experience through the entourage effect.
Original Z came out of Mendocino County, California, and was brought to prominence by the Terp Hogz collective with 3rd Gen Family. Its reported parents are Grape Ape and Grapefruit, though some accounts add an undisclosed third parent. It won Best Indica Flower at two High Times Cannabis Cups in 2015, NorCal and Michigan, then took first place for flower at the 2016 Emerald Cup. The strain's earlier name was retired in 2023 after a trademark dispute, and it now goes by Original Z.
The aroma is usually described as ripe grape and grapefruit peel over tropical fruit and berry, with an earthy, peppery edge underneath. Its effect is most often reported as calm and mood-lifting at first, easing into unhurried body relaxation.
Within a few years of those wins it had become one of the most influential cultivars of its era and a parent to a long line of later crosses. Choosing Original Z means going to the source of the fruit-forward, indica-leaning profile those descendants are measured against.
